Steuern
Wage tax is progressive with a tax-free amount of SRD 108,000 a year (SRD 9,000 a month) and rates of 8, 18, 28 and 38 percent. A flat 4 percent professional-cost allowance (max SRD 4,800 a year) reduces the base. Employees also pay APF pension contributions. Residents are taxed on worldwide income.
Aufenthalt und Visa
There is no investment route or golden visa. Residence starts with a temporary permit (up to two years, renewable); naturalisation is possible after about five years of continuous residence. The process is bureaucratic and slow.
Immobilieneigentum
Foreigners may own homes without a special permit, though land is often held on long lease (grondhuur, up to 99 years). Agricultural and state land is restricted and transactions require approval from the land-management ministry.
Lebenshaltung und Lebensqualität
Tropical climate, Dutch-language culture and very low cost of living, but with limited healthcare, moderate safety, patchy infrastructure and an unstable currency.
Reisepass und Mobilität
The Surinamese passport gives access to around 81 destinations without a prior visa (Henley 2026), including China, Japan and the Caribbean, but not visa-free to the EU or the US, so travel mobility is limited.
Warum Menschen nach Suriname auswandern
Dutch-speaking with strong ties to the Netherlands
Suriname is the only Dutch-speaking country outside Europe, with government, education and courts operating in Dutch and a large Surinamese-Dutch community, making the move straightforward for the Dutch.
High tax-free allowance and low cost of living
The first SRD 108,000 a year is tax-free and the cost of living is roughly 38 percent below the United States, so modest incomes pay little effective tax.
Ehrliche Kompromisse
