Taxes

PAYE rises progressively to 40 percent, with the top rate from about USD 36,000 per year, plus a 3 percent AIDS levy. At a EUR 54,000 equivalent the effective burden is around 35 percent, including 4.5 percent NSSA. VAT is 15 percent and corporate tax 25 percent. There is also a 2 percent tax on electronic money transfers (IMTT).

Residency and visas

Residency is generally arranged through employment, investment or retirement. Tax liability is tied to the source of income and to presence in the country, not to worldwide income.

Property ownership

Foreigners may own urban residential property. Farmland is excluded from foreign ownership, a consequence of land reform policy.

Cost of living and quality of life

Zimbabwe offers Victoria Falls, the Great Zimbabwe ruins and extensive wildlife parks. The cost of living is affordable, though past monetary instability (ZWL and ZiG) and limited banking services remain points of attention.

Passport and mobility

The Zimbabwean passport is weak, ranked around 66th, meaning many destinations require a visa in advance. This matters for anyone considering acquiring Zimbabwean nationality.

Why people move to Zimbabwe

  • Salary and tax in US dollars

Many salaries are paid in US dollars and taxed in that currency, giving predictability despite the history of currency instability.

  • Rich in nature and minerals

From Victoria Falls to large reserves of platinum, gold and lithium, the country combines natural beauty with a strong resource base.

Honest trade-offs
