Taxes
Wage tax is computed on gross salary via a monthly step schedule: 0% up to 50,000 ALL, in the 50,001-60,000 band 13% above 35,000, and above 60,000 ALL a 0% first 30,000, 13% up to 200,000 and 23% beyond. Social contributions are not deductible. Residents are taxed on worldwide income.
Residency and visas
A residence permit is relatively easy to obtain, often within a few months. Tax resident after more than 183 days. Naturalisation is generally possible after five years of legal residence.
Property ownership
Foreigners may own dwellings and buildings, but agricultural land is restricted. Unresolved cadastral disputes call for careful due diligence.
Cost of living and quality of life
Sunny Mediterranean climate, long coastline and very low costs, but public healthcare and infrastructure lag behind Western Europe.
Passport and mobility
The Albanian passport gives visa-free access to about 121 destinations. There is no operational golden visa or citizenship by investment yet.
Why people move to Albania
Low tax burden with an exemption
Income up to 50,000 ALL/month is tax-free, the top rate is only 23% and there is no wealth tax. A flat 15% corporate tax and full exemption for small businesses up to 14 million ALL turnover.
Very low cost of living
Albania is among the cheapest countries in Europe with a low Numbeo cost index, while many nationalities can stay visa-free for up to a year and a residence permit is easy to obtain.
Honest trade-offs
