Why people move to Sweden

  • Highest tax burden in Europe

The combined top marginal rate of 52.3% (municipal plus state) combined with employer social contributions of 31.42% makes the total tax wedge one of the highest in OECD countries.

  • Strong Swedish passport

The Swedish passport provides visa-free access to 193 countries (Henley 2025) and consistently ranks in the global top 5, together with full EU/Schengen freedom of movement.

  • High-quality welfare system

Universal healthcare, free education (including university for EU citizens) and 480 days of parental leave rank among the most generous in Europe, funded by the high tax burden.
