Taxes
Malaysia only taxes Malaysian-source income. Foreign income you bring into Malaysia is exempt for tax residents until the end of 2036, provided it was subject to a similar income tax in the source country. Local income is taxed progressively from 0% to 30% (above RM 2 million). Dividends from Malaysian companies: 2% on the portion above RM 100,000 per year. No wealth tax, no inheritance tax, no capital gains tax for individuals (real estate falls under the separate RPGT).
Residency and visas
MM2H (Malaysia My Second Home) is the best-known route, since the overhaul in three tiers: Silver (USD 150,000 deposit, 5-year visa), Gold (USD 500,000, 15 years) and Platinum (USD 1 million, 20 years, with work rights). Each tier requires a property purchase (from RM 600,000 / 1 million / 2 million) within a year. Under-50s must stay 90 days per year; those 50+ have no minimum stay. Alternatives: the DE Rantau nomad visa (income from USD 24,000 per year, up to 24 months) and the Employment Pass.
Property ownership
Foreigners can buy freehold property in their own name in Malaysia, quite unique in Asia. Each state does set a minimum price (usually RM 1 million, Selangor RM 2 million) and state consent is required. Since 1 January 2026, foreign buyers pay 8% stamp duty. Malay reserve land and agricultural land are excluded; on sale, the RPGT gains tax applies: 30% in the first 5 years, 10% thereafter.
Cost of living and quality of life
Kuala Lumpur and Penang combine low costs (Numbeo index ±34) with excellent private healthcare (a top medical tourism destination), fast fibre internet and widely spoken English. The choice of international schools and restaurants is broad. The climate is tropically hot and humid; safety is average, with petty crime in the big cities.
Passport and mobility
The Malaysian passport is among Asia's strongest: visa-free to 180 destinations (Henley 2026, rank 9). Note: Malaysia does not recognize dual citizenship and naturalization is virtually unattainable in practice. Almost all expats therefore stay on a long-term residence programme such as MM2H, keeping their own passport.

Why people move to Malaysia
Foreign income untaxed until the end of 2036
Those who become tax resident can bring foreign dividends, interest, rent and pensions into Malaysia exempt until 31 December 2036, provided the income was subject to a similar tax in the source country. For anyone living off a foreign holding company or investment portfolio, Malaysian taxation therefore remains very limited in practice; only local income falls into the rates of up to 30%.
MM2H: clear programme in three tiers, 5 to 20 years
Malaysia My Second Home has existed for over twenty years, making it one of Asia's most proven residence programmes. Silver (USD 150,000 deposit) gives 5 years, Gold (USD 500,000) 15 years and Platinum (USD 1 million) 20 years including work rights. From year two, up to 50% of the deposit can be withdrawn for property, healthcare or education, and those over 50 have no mandatory minimum stay.
Asian quality of life at a fraction of the price
With a Numbeo index of ±34, life in Malaysia costs a fraction of Western Europe, while private hospitals rank among Asia's best and English works almost everywhere. Kuala Lumpur offers metropolitan life with international schools and an airport hub for all of Asia; Penang and Langkawi provide island and beach alternatives within the same country.
