Taxes
National income tax runs 0% to 8%; Vaduz adds a 150% municipal surcharge, so effective rates are the national rate times 2.5 (top rate 20% in Vaduz, national max 22.4%). Wealth is not taxed separately but via a 4% notional yield added to income. Crypto and other private capital gains are exempt.
Residency and visas
Residence is very hard to obtain: strict quotas and partly a lottery. Naturalisation takes about 30 years or requires a municipal vote.
Property ownership
Foreigners can effectively not buy residential property; only a primary residence with permanent resident status.
Cost of living and quality of life
Very safe, prosperous and clean Alpine country with high quality of life, but small, expensive and with a tight housing market.
Passport and mobility
The passport gives visa-free access to around 181 destinations. Via EFTA, Liechtenstein is in the EEA and Schengen, allowing free movement within Europe.
Why people move to Liechtenstein
Low effective tax burden
Combined top rates of roughly 20-22.4%, no inheritance tax and tax-free capital gains on private movable assets keep the effective burden on salary low.
Stability and prosperity
AAA-grade stability, a strong Swiss franc, EEA membership and excellent infrastructure, banking and safety.
Honest trade-offs
