Taxes
Income tax is progressive from 5% to 30%. A single filer has a JOD 10,000 exemption (JOD 9,000 personal plus JOD 1,000 expense allowance); families up to JOD 23,000. Employees pay 7.5% social security up to a monthly wage of JOD 3,349. Taxable income above JOD 200,000 carries a 1% national contribution tax. No wealth or inheritance tax; VAT is 16%.
Residency and visas
Residence is via annual permits based on work or investment; there is an investor route (golden visa) and even a citizenship-by-investment programme. Ordinary naturalisation, however, is very difficult for non-Arabs.
Property ownership
Foreigners may own residential property but need Council of Ministers approval, and access is tied to reciprocity with the home country. Transfers carry roughly 6% transfer tax.
Cost of living and quality of life
Amman offers a dry climate, rich history and strong private healthcare, but the country faces severe water scarcity, high unemployment and regional tensions.
Passport and mobility
The Jordanian passport offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to about 55 destinations, placing it low on the global mobility ranking.
Why people move to Jordan
Territorial system with generous exemptions
Jordan in principle taxes only Jordan-source income and grants high personal exemptions (JOD 9,000 single, up to JOD 23,000 per family), so low and middle incomes pay little income tax and entry rates start at just 5%.
Strategic hub with strong private healthcare
Amman is a stable, relatively safe base in the Middle East with strong private hospitals and a reputation as a medical-tourism destination, and English is widely used in business.
Honest trade-offs
