Taxes

Income tax is the lower of 20% of total income or 26% of income above the GBP 21,250 exemption threshold (marginal relief). Effective rate runs from 0% to a maximum of 20%. From 1 January 2026 everyone is taxed independently. No capital gains, wealth or inheritance tax. GST 5%.

Residency and visas

Residence and work fall under the Control of Housing and Work Law. You can work on Registered or Licensed status, but full Entitled status only follows after about ten years. Wealthy migrants can be admitted faster via the 2(1)(e) high-value residency with a minimum tax of GBP 250,000 per year.

Property ownership

Home ownership is heavily regulated. Only people with Entitled or Licensed status can access qualified housing; newcomers without that status generally cannot buy and are limited to the restricted Registered rental market.

Cost of living and quality of life

Safe, prosperous island with a mild climate, coastal nature and a strong finance sector, but small and somewhat isolated with very high living costs and house prices. Excellent connectivity via island-wide fibre.

Passport and mobility

Residents travel on a British passport, which per the 2026 Henley index gives visa-free access to around 186 destinations. Jersey itself sits outside the EU and the customs union and is not in Schengen.

Why people move to Jersey

  • Low and simple: 20% top rate, no capital gains or inheritance tax

Jersey applies a flat maximum 20% income tax, no capital gains tax, no wealth tax and no inheritance or estate tax. Capital appreciation, including crypto held privately, is in principle untaxed.

  • Marginal relief lowers the effective burden for lower incomes

Thanks to the GBP 21,250 exemption threshold and the 26% marginal rate, lower and middle incomes pay an effective rate below 20%. Combine this with a stable British Crown Dependency, English as working language, GBP and island-wide gigabit fibre.

Honest trade-offs
