Taxes

Residency and visas

The residency process is moderately accessible. Foreigners can apply for a residence permit; permanent residence and work carry additional conditions. Anyone who becomes resident is taxed on worldwide income.

Property ownership

Foreigners may own property freely, without special restrictions. On transfer, transfer tax and stamp duty apply.

Cost of living and quality of life

Jamaica is English-speaking Caribbean, with a warm climate and a strong culture of its own. Note: violent crime is high and public healthcare is limited, which needs attention when relocating.

Passport and mobility

The Jamaican passport gives visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to around 90 destinations. For Dutch newcomers Jamaica is easy to reach, with English as the working language.

Why people move to Jamaica

  • Friendly to capital

Jamaica levies no capital gains tax, no net wealth tax and no inheritance tax. A transfer tax does apply when property and estates change hands.

  • English-speaking and open to buyers

English is the working language and foreigners may own property freely. Together with the large tax-free threshold, that keeps the move to Jamaica straightforward.

Honest trade-offs
