🇬🇹 Moving to Guatemala: tax, residency and cost of living

Guatemala applies a territorial tax system: only Guatemalan-source income is taxed. Employees fall under the Rentas del Trabajo regime with a progressive rate of 5% up to GTQ 300,000 of taxable income and 7% above that, a fixed personal deduction of GTQ 48,000 and fully deductible IGSS contributions of 4.83%. Companies choose between 25% on net profit or a simplified regime of 5%/7% on gross turnover. VAT is 12% and Guatemalan-source capital gains are taxed at 10%. There is no wealth tax and the inheritance tax was abolished in 2026.

Taxes

Salary is taxed under Rentas del Trabajo: 5% up to GTQ 300,000 taxable and 7% above, after a fixed GTQ 48,000 deduction and the 4.83% IGSS contribution. Up to GTQ 12,000 of documented VAT can additionally be credited. Foreign income is untaxed under the territorial system. There is no wealth tax and, since 2026, no inheritance tax.

Residency and visas

The rentista/pensionado route requires proven income of at least USD 1,250 per month plus USD 300 per dependent and grants direct permanent residency. An investor route from USD 100,000 also exists. Naturalisation is generally possible after five years.

Property ownership

Foreigners may freely buy and own residential property. Restrictions apply to land within a certain distance of national borders, rivers and the coastline.

Cost of living and quality of life

Guatemala offers a pleasant highland climate, colonial towns such as Antigua, Lake Atitlan and low living costs. Set against this are high crime, variable infrastructure and weak public healthcare.

Passport and mobility

The Guatemalan passport gives visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to around 137 destinations (Henley 2026). Under the CA-4 agreement there is free movement with Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

Why people move to Guatemala

  • Territorial tax system

Guatemala only taxes Guatemalan-source income. Foreign income, foreign capital gains and investments from outside the country stay entirely untaxed.

  • Low rates and low cost of living

Salary income tax is just 5 to 7 percent and the cost of living is far below Western European levels.

Honest trade-offs
