Taxes
Tax year 2026 follows SRI resolution NAC-DGERCGC25-00000043. The tax-free threshold (fracción básica desgravada) is USD 12,208. The 9.45 percent IESS employee contribution is deductible and subtracted from salary before computing tax. Personal expenses give a tax credit of 18 percent of documented spending, capped at USD 1,035.46 without dependents.
Residency and visas
Temporary residency is relatively easy and obtainable within a few months; permanent residency follows after about 21 months and naturalization after three years of continuous residence (two years if married to an Ecuadorian). Dual citizenship is allowed.
Property ownership
Foreigners may freely own residential real estate with the same rights as citizens; restrictions apply only to land in border areas and protected zones.
Cost of living and quality of life
Low cost of living, pleasant climate and diverse geography (coast, Andes, Amazon, Galápagos). The main concerns are sharply increased crime since 2023 and reliance on oil revenues.
Passport and mobility
The Ecuadorian passport provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 95 destinations per the Henley Passport Index 2026. A 5 percent ISD tax applies to capital leaving the country.
Why people move to Ecuador
US dollar with no currency risk
Ecuador has used the US dollar as its official currency since 2000, so there is no exchange rate risk and no currency conversion friction for those saving or earning in USD.
Low cost of living and fast residency path
Cost of living is roughly 56 percent below the US, temporary residency can be arranged within a few months, and naturalization is possible after just three years of residence.
Honest trade-offs
