Taxes
Denmark levies the highest effective top marginal tax rate in the EU. The combined top rate reaches 55.9% (state tax 15% + municipal tax averaging 25.1% + AM contribution 8%). Income above DKK 611,800 (2026) triggers the top rate (topskat). No wealth tax; capital gains taxed up to 42%. Employees bear most of the wage tax; employer social contributions are relatively low.
Residency and visas
EU/EEA citizens may settle freely. Non-EU nationals must apply through SIRI (International Recruitment and Integration Agency). The Pay Limit Scheme requires an annual salary of DKK 514,000 (2025). Permanent residence requires a minimum of 8 years (points system). Naturalisation requires 9 years of residence and strict language and culture tests.
Property ownership
Non-residents need permission from the Ministry of Justice (Justitsministeriet) to own real estate, except EU/EEA citizens working or permanently residing there. Summer houses (sommerhuse) are restricted for non-Danes under the Sommerhusreglen.
Cost of living and quality of life
Denmark consistently ranks in the global top 3 on the World Happiness Report. Very high safety (8.5/10), excellent cycling and public transport infrastructure, and strong work-life balance. Cost of living is high (index 83). English is spoken by 90% of the population.
Passport and mobility
The Danish passport provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 194 countries (Henley 2025), ranked second globally. EU and Schengen member with full freedom of movement.
Why people move to Denmark
Highest tax burden in the EU
The 55.9% top marginal rate and the 8% AM contribution on gross salary make Denmark the most heavily taxed EU country for high earners, often called the topskat trap.
Strong Danish passport
The Danish passport provides visa-free access to 194 countries (Henley 2025), ranked second globally. Full EU/Schengen freedom of movement is guaranteed.
Stability and welfare system
Universal healthcare, free education and one of the highest life expectancies in Europe are funded by the high tax burden. Denmark ranks among the least corrupt countries in the world.
