Taxes
Brazil taxes residents on worldwide income with a top rate of just 27.5%, and since 2026 salaries up to R$ 5,000 per month (± € 9,500 per year) are fully exempt (Lei 15.270/2025). The same law does end the famous dividend exemption: distributions above R$ 50,000 per month per company face a 10% withholding tax, and top incomes above R$ 1.2 million per year pay at least 10% (IRPFM). Capital gains 15-22.5%; crypto sales up to R$ 35,000 per month remain untaxed. No wealth tax; inheritance and gift tax (ITCMD) is a state tax of 2-8%.
Residency and visas
Brazil has one of the cheapest real-estate golden visas in the world: the VIPER investor visa requires R$ 1 million in urban property (± € 160,000), or R$ 700,000 (± € 110,000) in the North and Northeast, family included, with a direct route to permanent residence. Digital nomads get their own visa at USD 1,500 monthly income or USD 18,000 in savings. Stay legally for 4 years (1 year with a Brazilian spouse or child) and you can apply for the passport.
Property ownership
Foreigners, even without a residence permit, buy urban property in full freehold in their own name, with the same rights as Brazilians; only a CPF tax number is needed. Restrictions apply solely to rural land (area limits and INCRA approval) and the 150 km border strip. Transfer tax (ITBI) of 2-3% plus notary and registration costs, ± 4-6% in total.
Cost of living and quality of life
Brazil is a continent in itself: from São Paulo's world-city economy to Florianópolis (the remote-work hub) and the beach life of the Northeast. The cost of living is less than half of Western Europe, private healthcare in the big cities is excellent and affordable, and fibre is widespread. The flip side: safety varies strongly by city and even by neighbourhood, and outside expat circles Portuguese is close to indispensable. Direct flights connect Brazil to Europe daily; the time difference with Central Europe is only 4-5 hours.
Passport and mobility
The Brazilian passport ranks 16th on the Henley index 2026, with 169 visa-free destinations, including all of Schengen, the UK and Japan; the US still requires a visa. Naturalisation is possible after just 4 years of legal residence, and even after 1 year with a Brazilian spouse or a child born in Brazil. Proven Portuguese proficiency is required; Brazil allows dual nationality.

- Digital-nomad-visum (RN 45/2022): USD 1.500 inkomen/mnd of USD 18.000 spaargeld; 1 jaar, verlengbaar met 1 jaar · €16,500/j · Residency in 4 years
- Gezinsband: met Braziliaanse partner of in Brazilië geboren kind is naturalisatie al na 1 jaar wettelijk verblijf mogelijk
Why people move to Brazil
Golden visa from ± € 110,000, passport in 4 years
The VIPER investor visa has one of the lowest real-estate thresholds in the world: R$ 700,000 (± € 110,000) in the North and Northeast or R$ 1 million (± € 160,000) elsewhere, with your partner and children covered without extra investment. After 4 years of legal residence (1 year with a Brazilian spouse or child) you can naturalise into a top-20 passport with 169 visa-free destinations, while keeping your own nationality.
Moderate taxes with no wealth tax
The 27.5% top rate is far below Western European levels, and since 2026 the first ± € 9,500 per year is entirely tax-free. There is no wealth tax. Capital gains start at 15%, and crypto sales up to R$ 35,000 per month are exempt. To be fair: dividends above R$ 50,000 per month carry a 10% withholding tax since 2026, and anyone collecting more than R$ 1.2 million per year in total pays at least 10% on everything: so model your distribution strategy in advance.
A continent of lifestyle options at half the price
From the mountain lakes of Santa Catarina to the warm beaches of Bahia: Brazil offers every climate and every lifestyle, at a cost of living below half of Western Europe. Florianópolis ranks among South America's best remote-work cities, private healthcare in the big cities is excellent, and the time difference with Central Europe is only 4-5 hours: ideal for continuing to run business in Europe. Do choose your city and neighbourhood deliberately, as safety varies strongly by location.
