Taxes
Personal income tax (RC-IVA) is a flat 13% on employment income. By keeping invoices, that tax is largely creditable against the 13% VAT, and an exemption of roughly 4 minimum wages applies. On income equal to EUR 54,000 the effective burden lands near 22%, including about 12.71% employee pension contribution (AFP). Corporate tax is 25%, VAT 13%. There is no general net wealth tax, but since 2020 a tax on large fortunes above roughly BOB 30,000,000 applies, affecting only the very wealthy. In practice Bolivia taxes mainly Bolivian-source income.
Residency and visas
Residency is relatively accessible, with routes for pensioners with steady income and for investors, among others. After roughly 3 years of legal residence, naturalisation becomes possible. Administration runs in Spanish and can be slow.
Property ownership
Foreigners may own real estate on nearly the same footing as Bolivians. A ban does apply on foreign ownership within 50 km of the national borders. Notarial and registration processes are local and call for Spanish-language guidance.
Cost of living and quality of life
Bolivia offers the Andes and the Amazon with a very low cost of living. Altitude is decisive: La Paz sits at about 3,640 metres, which takes acclimatisation. Climate and landscape vary widely, from high plateau to tropical lowland.
Passport and mobility
The Bolivian passport gives visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to about 80 destinations, which is on the weaker side internationally. Bolivia sits centrally in South America, bordering Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Paraguay, among others.
Why people move to Bolivia
Low and creditable flat tax
A 13% flat tax that you can largely credit against VAT, plus a mostly territorial reach, keeps the burden on Bolivian income low. Foreign-source income largely falls outside scope.
Very low costs amid world-class nature
The cost of living ranks among the lowest on the continent, while you live between the Andes and the Amazon. A modest budget stretches far here.
Honest trade-offs
