Ordinary residence is tied to an employer or sponsor; naturalisation requires around 25 years and is rare in practice.
Property ownership
Foreigners may buy only in designated freehold zones such as parts of Manama and reclaimed islands.
Cost of living and quality of life
A relatively open and affordable Gulf state with good healthcare, but an extreme summer climate (around 45 degrees), dust and water stress.
Passport and mobility
The Bahraini passport gives access to about 91 destinations, weak to average worldwide.
Why people move to Bahrain
No income tax, an open and affordable Gulf state
Only 1% unemployment insurance is withheld; otherwise no income, capital gains or inheritance tax.
But 10% VAT and employer-tied residence
Since 2022 there is 10% VAT and ordinary residence is tied to a sponsor, with a very long path to citizenship.
Honest trade-offs
